MONDAY, MAY 3, 1982 Honors Convocation Awards Given “No matter how many honors may come to each of uS, we have a responsibility to continue to give the best of ourselves,” said Dr. Raymond E. Bauer in remarks during the 22nd annual Honors Convocation at North Carolina Wesleyan College on Sunday, April 18. A total of 27 awards were presented to students, faculty, and campus organizations for achievement in academic and student life activities during the 1981-82 academic year. Dr. Bauer was among the original faculty when the College opened its doors to students in September 1960. A professor of physical education, Dr. Bauer served as Academic Dean of the College 1972-1976. In his Convocation Address, Dr. Bauer said, “We should always pursue wisdom and knowledge. Any honors we received in that pursuit, however, ultimately must go unto the Lord.” Karen Lee KoHeck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Carl Kolleck of Medford, New Jersey, received the top student award, the President’s Cup. It is presented each year to the senior voted by the faculty as most favorably exemphfying the ideas of North Carolina Wesleyan College. Ms. Kolleck, an elementary education major, was presented the award by College President Dr. S. Bruce Petteway and Vice President of the Office of Student Life William Jay Gar low. Earl Wayland Roberson, Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wayland Roberson, Sr. of Hampton, Virginia, was honored as the recipient of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. The College is authorized by the New York Southern Society to present two Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards yearly, one to a student and one to a community leader. Jasper L. and Margaret Cummings of Rocky Mount received the coveted award at the College’s Founders Day Convocation last October. Roberson is a senior majoring in biology. Debra J. Webb, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Smith and Bonnie Fulcher Flynn, wife of Donald H. Flynn of Wilson, North Carolina were presented with Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards by Interim Vice President of Academics Frances R. Harrison. Ms. Webb, a senior majoring in elementary education, received her Academic Achievement Award for those students that have attended North Carolina Wesleyan College for four years. Mrs. Flynn, a senior majoring in psychology-sociology- antoropology, received her Academic Achievement Award for those students that have transferred to the College. Mrs. Flynn was also the recipient of the Psychology Award. Other students receiving awards during the 22nd Honors Convocation were: Sun Savings and Loan Behavorial Studies Award - Shirley Pittman White, wife of Ernest White of Scotland Neck, a senior majoring in behaviorial studies. Sun Savings and Loan Biology Award - Kenneth Newton Hickman, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth N. Hickman, Sr. of Buena Vista, Virginia, a senior majoring in wildlife and fisheries management. Peoples Bank Business Administration - Economics Award - Margaret Brake of Route 2, Battleboro, a senior majoring in business. Sun Savings and Loan Chemistry Award - Lee Joyner, Jr., son of Mrs. Lee Joyner of Route 5, Rocky Mount, a senior majoring in biology and mathematics. He was also the recipient of the Sun Savings and Loan Mathematics Award. Criminal Justice Award - Marian Jone Marshall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Jack Marshall, Jr. of Greensboro, a senior majoring in criminal justice and theatre. SNCAE Education Award - Joye Manning Latta, wife of H. J. Latta, Jr. of Nashville, a senior majoring in secondary education. Freshman Writing Award - Steven Hisada, son of Mr. and Mrs. Juan E. Hisada of Raleigh, a freshman majoring in business. John Paul Jones History Award - Margarita Paiewonsky, daughter of Dennis and Silvia Di Francis de Paiewonsky of Dominican Republic, a senior majoring in history. Helen Marriam Thorp Music Award - Anne Lee Smithson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Smithson of Virginia Beach, Virginia, a senior majoring in music. Physical Education Award - Sharon Mentoria Arrington, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert yG’rington of Farmville, Virginia, a senior majoring in physical education. She is also the recipient of the Pilot Club Leadership and Service Award. Politics Award - Hank Hardy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hardy of Elm City, a senior majoring in politics. Psychology Award - Dorothy Boone Inscoe, wife of Dr. A. G. Inscoe of Spring Hope, a senior majoring in psycholo^. Religion Award - Thomas Andrew Watson, son of the Reverend and Mrs. Willard L. Watson of Mayfield, Kentucky, a senior majoring in religion. Sociology Award Christine Dancy, the daguhter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Dancy of Pinetops, a senior majoring in psy chology-sociolog y- anthropology. Theatre Award - Anthony Demetrio Pierce, the son of Ekay Pierce and Ann A. Lee Pierce of Enfield, a senior majoring in theatre. Sarah Alexander Tulloss Award - Elizabeth Karen Barreca, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Barreca of Portsmouth, Virginia, a senior majoring in physical education. Student Life Award - Athletic Commisslm. James R. Hailey Leadership and Service Award - Carson Elmore Saunders, Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carson E. Saunders, Sr. of Emporia, Virginia, a senior majoring in busine^- politics. Publications Award - Martie Louise Barbour, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Barbour of West Point, Virginia, a junior majoring in English. Nu Gamma Phi Professor of the Year - Dr. Ellis Duane Davis, an associate professor of criminal justice. The winners of the Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities certificates and the Omicron Delta Kappa Awards were recognized at the Convocation. Their achievements had already been announced separately earlier this academic year. The student athlete awards, including the male and female Outstandir^ Athlete Awards, will be presented at a separate ceremony later in the week. North Carolina Wesleyan College is a four year liberal arts institution closely associated with The United Methodist Church. Graduation exercises will be conducted, weather permitting, on the front lawn of the Braswell Administration Building-on Saturday, May 8. Johnson to take trip abroad with Wesleyan students By Brooks Skinner Decree staff Dr. Allen Johnson, Professor of History will be taking a group of seven people, two of whom are Wesleyan students, on a tour of The Holy Land, Egypt, and Greece. The program was sponsored by the Criminal Justice Department and according to Bob DeCatsye, Criminal Justice Director, the day was the best ever. DeCatsye stated that approximately 400 students from Wesleyan and 28 from other colleges attended the event to discuss career plans and employment opportunities within the Criminal Justice field. Recruiting representatives from 31 agencies at the federal, state and local agencies were represented and were very pleased with this years turn out of students. Some of the larger agencies participating were the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Campbell University Law School, N.C. Division of Prisons, State Bureau of Investigation, N.C. Wildlife, and police departments from Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro, Raleigh, Rocky Mount and Wilmington. DeCatsye stat^ that the purpose of the program is to keep students current of changing employment trends as they develop within the field. He said it also allows students to study prerequisites for employment as well as current salary structures; Rufus Edmisten, North Carolina Attorney General, was a guest speaker and made a strong law and order speech. Edmisten outlined many current problems facing the state in areas of drugs, juvenile delinquency, and organized crime. Edmisten also stressed the urgent need for dedicated young people to enter the area of Criminal Justice. He warned those present that the financial reward is not great within the system and that they should not expect to get rich working on a police deparmtent. He stated the real reward was in serving and especially in working with young people in the hopes of diverting them from a life of crime. trip will be Dr. Johnson’s tenth trip overseas in charge of a Wesleyan group. He led two trips abroad when he taught at Oklahoma Baptist College. The gorup will leave from New York May 10. They will visit The Holy Land first. Dr. Johnson explained that the group will visit Bible sites, both Christian and Hebrew. The group plans tours of Bethlehem and Nazereth as well as Modern Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv. The Sea of Galilee, Jericho and the Dead Sea Area, and Masada are also featured in Israel. From Tel-Aviv the group will take a bus through Gaza and across the Sinai desert into Egypt. A ferry across the Suez Canal and a short bus trip through the Nile River Delta will take them to Cairo. In Cairo the group will visit the Pyramids and the Cairo Museum along with visits to Christian and Muslem areas in Cairo. A two day trip up the Nile to Thebes, including visits to the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Karnac of Luxor, will cap off the Egyptian tour. After flying back to Cairo the group will fly on to Athens. In Athens the group will visit the Acropolis as well as the Athens museum which houses some of the most valuable treasures of classical Greece and Troy. There will also be a one day cruise through the islands around Athens and a one day trip to Corinth. The group will fly home to New May 24 via Swissair.
